Recommendation #24 – Leviathan Wakes

DDR has brought a number of people into my life, and this person is no exception. I originally met her older brother, but soon I met her and got to know her whole family. They were wonderful people who showed me love by inviting me into their lives. We had meals, played card and board games, and built the type of friendship that lasts for decades.

Recommendation #24 from Gwen (Keohane) Marsh

Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey

Leviathan Wakes is the first book in an eight book series entitled, “The Expanse”. Gwen actually recommended the entire series to me, which I will get around to reading, but I only added the first book to my recommendation list.

Per Wikipedia, “Leviathan Wakes is set in a future in which humanity has colonized much of the Solar System. Earth, governed by the United Nations, and the Martian Congressional Republic act as competing superpowers, maintaining an uneasy military alliance in order to exert dual hegemony over the peoples of the Asteroid Belt, known as “Belters.” Belters, whose bodies tend to be thin and elongated due to their low-gravity environment, carry out the gritty, blue-collar work that provides the system with essential natural resources, but they are largely marginalized by the rest of the Solar System. The Outer Planets Alliance (OPA), a network of loosely-aligned militant groups, seeks to combat the Belt’s exploitation at the hands of the “Inners,” who, in turn, have branded the OPA a terrorist organization.

I’m excited to start the rest of the series as soon as I get settled in Denver. The characters were complex and enjoyable to get to know, and I liked thinking about what space colonization would look like in the future. The series has been going since 2011 with regular installments, which I also appreciate. I don’t think anyone likes waiting more than a decade for another book in a long-running series.

I didn’t take any notes on this one, as I had too much fun reading it. But, if you don’t want to read it, or don’t have the time, you can also watch it. Currently 3 seasons have aired on the SYFY network and Amazon has also picked up the series if you have Prime.

As for the song tied to this post, it is the 2nd track from this month’s Fellowship playlist. it’s a good song about adventure, just like this series also has some serious adventuring going on.
